Tom Keer’s 6 month old LCS pup, Rebel, with one of his first wild birds.

Accounts of my death are grossly exaggerated, no I’m not dead yet, I’m just a failure at bloging!!  I’m having too much fun hunting, training puppies and getting the new Lion Country Kennel set up for winter- real inside runs, heat and everything used being noted for product reviews later. For now, here’s some updates and photos of our LCS puppies’ progress submitted by their new owners. (and more to follow!) All are now hunting and have all 5 pups now 6 months old.  All 5 have had birds killed over point. Tom Keer’s pup has grouse and woodcock pointed but he starts unfairly early up on the cape (MA) and gets to hunt private ground .

This is “Buck” owned by my longtime friends Dick and Helen Brenneman.

Hey, the amateur “King of the Woods”  Dick Brenneman is taking his LCS pup “Buck” to Texas for January and February wild quail.  Can “Buck” make Dick’s derby team this Spring? … My two pups have been pointing my recall quail and homing pigeons from LCS launchers in my acre training yard since they were 12 weeks old and they back their mom, Speed, naturally.

They are quail crazy! … maybe too crazy …

But the real woods is the  bad news, grouse are almost extinct in PA. In short, well, essentially it sucks here this year. The downpours in the month of May hurt big time! Woodcock flights are not here yet but I’m killing an occasional local bird in Roger’s covers and  a few grouse up north. My personal flush rate is  less than one grouse per hour! Allegheny Nat’l Forest has the worst grouse numbers in 10 years and in most of my covers, only the tick numbers are up! Beer is good …grouse hunters are crazy… I’m resorting to songwriting.  Hey.. Still having a ball …my quail bill is growing ..but the puppies are good for my health..  More on how we use box birds and pigeons in hard times in the woods a bit later.. No promises though till wild bird  season ends at Thanksgiving.

Autumns best!

YES THE GROUSE ARE PRETTY MUCH GONE HERE IN THE GA& NC MOUNTAINS ALSO DUE TO A LACK OF TIMBER CUTTING. BEEN HUNTING IN MAINE LAST 3 SEASONS WITH GOOD RESULTS

Buck – I am doing same…training mom/dad’s 6 month old Brittany puppy. Simbo is doing well. Straub/Amos is 4 yrs old and helping me train the pup to point, retrieve, find occasional woodcock. The SS Farm has not shown much WC life yet….still not here I hope. This week should come around better, or else the WC are extinct like the RG you mentioned.
